    @Awesome Charts The formula used for this list is based strictly on each song's weekly chart performance inside the MediaBase Top 40. Each chart position earned points relative to its weekly spin totals. So the longer a song stays on the chart, the more points it earns, and the higher it could rank. A few songs stayed longer than a year early in the decade, however, around 2016, many songs began longer than normal chart runs. New Rules spent 93 weeks in the Top 40 and landed at #1 by a mile. The #2 song, Shape of You, logged 76 weeks inside the 40. There is absolutely no chart manipulation or special weighting to the chart to account for that because the purpose of the list was to track each week accurately. The formula is not an inverse point system either where #1 gets 40 points and #40 gets 1 point. That system is flawed because it assumes the #1 song is 40x more popular than the #1 song which is not the case. The #1 song is only about 8x more popular than #40. The formula takes that into account. I hope this helps explain the chart methodology used for these rankings.
