The mysterious addition to the School of Athens, the figure is not a depiction of Michaelangelo. That would make no sense. He is writing. Not a chisel and stone, but a pen and paper.

Raphael seemed to have more inner peace than that of Leonardo or Michelangelo.

Raphael adds the figure of Michelangelo a figure that does not fit in the Fresco of The school of Athens. People argue about some of his paintings because could have a meaning and sometimes don’t, but the hypothesis, the opinions, the ideas and the paintings are alive.

No wonder Michelangelo thought Raphael plagiarized him.

It would have been nice if he had been a little less talented and a little more responsible and centered. He was out of control with his sexuality.

Yep, his hyper-sexuality cost him is life at an early age. There did seem to be an unbalance there. With some it's drugs, with others it's drinking, and with other's it's sex. With some it goes as far even as being everything. Overindulging in anything speaks of unbalance and some sort of lack _a lack that apparently the painting by itself was not fulfilling, odd.

Azay Deelay oh my gosh... yea... you’re so right. It would’ve been much better if this person who lived 400 years before you had lived according to what you consider “within control” oh and totally totally worth trading his artistic talent for that too.

I didn’t say that “ talent” alone works. I said that only practice won’t turn you into a Raphael, you might become a great painter but definitely not a Raphael. How many kids start playing soccer from a very young age, and they turn into great players no doubt but not a Pelé or a Maradona. Some people are just unique and their greatness can’t be achieved.

  31. JaySmiddy

    JaySmiddy6 ヶ月 前

Maira De Lucca they started painting and had mentors at really young ages and there were no distractions back then so they had all the time in the world to study and paint. It’s all mileage and having good teachers. Talent may be real, but it doesn’t get you far on its own.

Practice, practice and practice some more. People are born with lucky gift of natural talent but it can be achieved by you if you want it bad enough.

Not more skilled than Michelangelo for sure. Have you ever looked at the sistine chapel's frescos? It is known fact, and this documentary stresses it too, that he learned a lot of his technique from Michael Angelo, so what you say makes no sense. Julius II just happened to be fixated in The School of Athens, but one pope's personal taste does not make one artist better than the other; and especially if you think that he might have also felt challenged in his power by Michael Angelo's clear statement in the sistine chapel, that humans are as much God's children as Jesus himself was, and that we were not only created in its image, but actually are IT. In the centre scene of these frescos he brings god and man so close together, almost touching, as if in saying that the latter does not need the Catholic patriarchal hierarchy to reach it, to connect with it. Popes don't like to be challenged by art which works as vehicle for new, different, ''dangerous'' ideas like this. He chose Raphael as his protege because, whereas he was just as skilled as ML (if not less), on the contrary to the latter, his work presented no threat or critique to the conventional Catholic ethos, of humans needing religious authority (priests, bishops and popes) in order to connect to the divine. And no I have never even studied art, I'm just a human being with a brain who is not afraid of exercising critical thinking. Plus Camilo, if you know so much, you should know that it's not wise to make unfounded over-generalising statements. Critical thinking is key to assessing things fairly.
