Now I understand why college students are so gullible and ignorant. They are getting a lecture on climate, from a guy who has PhD in protesting. I'm willing to bet this guy never took a single science class since high-school, and he thinks he has a handle on the Earth's climate. There is a very good reason that we should fear our future, and these students are it.

@stau ffap Warming is a natural state of this planet right now. We have reached the halfway point between glaciation events. It's supposed to be getting warmer. As for our contribution to that. it looks like maybe 2% more that would normally occur. It's been much higher in distant history and the Earth survived. In fact it thrived. Global warming went from a science investigation to a political debate and now it has become a religion. I'm following the real science. Fuck all of you liberal puppets.

Look at some MIT lectures about quantum physics, organic chemistry or mathematics (you can find them on youtube) and then you see what normal lectures look like. This is not a lecture. I wish lectures at universities were that easy....(well not really, then we woulnd't be learning much).

  12. stau ffap

    stau ffap5 ヶ月 前

That's a pretty ignorant comment. This certainly isn't an obligatory lecture. Of course a physics student wouldn't have to listen to Roger Hallam to get his bachelor or masters degree. And of course a student of atmospheric science wouldn't learn it from Roger Hallam. The problem at the universities are the social sciences. There you'll find the occasional people, who have just joined the university to push their views into the scientific literature. But those people are a minority. They are just a minority that people unfortunately pay a lot of attention to, because apparently that's what our media has become. It's not about substance any more. It's not about what's really important, but just about grabbing people's attention and of course nothing grabs attention as much as a person at a university expressing a moronic view. You should blame the media not the universities. That being said, the climate science is very clear. We are causing global warming by burning fossil fuels and by our methan emissions. It's also very clear that if we stay on the path that we are on (Emissionscenario RCP8.5 from the IPCC) then the consequences can be catastrophic. And by catastrophic i mean it can cause the destabilisation of our systems and it will cause a lot of deaths. We can get into details in case you're not familiar with the peer-reviewed literature regarding high emission scenarios. So it's clear that a warming over 1.5 or 1°C is too big of a risk to take. A lot of the damages would be irreversible and it would cost a lot. That's one reason why it's so irrational when people talk about the costs of switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources. They are completely ignoring the future costs of global warming.

I have a question for climate change advocates. If the global temp is indeed warmer now than it was during the ice age then how are the ice age animals frozen in permafrost? Obviously if the ground was frozen when the animals died then they could not be forced into the ground without causing massive damage to the remains but if they were exposed on the surface for even a short period of time then the remains would have started to putrefy, the bodies own internal temperature at the time of death would be enough to start the process in hours and is noticeable within days. I know the answer, I just want to see who else does. No I do not think the earth was warmer during the ice age than it is now, so don't even try to come at me from that angle.

I hope it is not a stumble as well. If the solar insolation has only varied 0.7 watts per sq. metre in the last 160 kyr (IPCC). At the peak of warming at all the Interglacials all the charts (even the adjusted charts) show that C02 keeps rising for an average of 800 years, C02 climbs to its highest ppm but the solar insolation is dropping slowly (0.1 to 0.2) so C02 at its maximum does not keep warming the temperature the earth cools with only a small insolation drop. So it is blatantly obvious that C02 has a small effect on atmospheric temperature.

Freddy van Manen grindupBaker + Freddy van Manen "If warming to + 2 degrees celcious could be catastrophic for the world why it didn't happen before as showed in this Greenland ice core graph". Because the surface temperature of Greenland and the North Atlantic region isn't the same as the Global Mean Surface Temperature (GMST) and it doesn't change the same, not even close. 126,000 to 122,000 years ago when Earth's Global Mean Surface Temperature (GMST) was 0.5 degrees higher than now the surface of the Greenland ice sheet (GIS) was 5-8 degrees higher than now (from a Greenland ice core proxy like you reference) so it's 10-16x as much for Greenland so when Global Mean Surface Temperature (GMST) becomes 1.0 degrees higher than now the surface of the Greenland ice sheet (GIS) will be 10-16 degrees higher than now. It's massive. I'm sure it'll actually be a bit less like 7-12 degrees higher than now for the first few hundred years but it's still massive. That's why half the ice is now already guaranteed to be gone off Greenland in the next 300-700 years with no more warming at all. It happened before in the same situation and it'll happen again. That's why. Boy was that ever an easy one.

At 25:40 "water vapour Roger makes one of his huge mistakes. The water vapour +ve feedback and loss of Arctic Ocean sea ice loss +ve feedback are definitely already included in each of the 2 "+0.5" on the blackboard (as they are included in the +1.2 degrees that's already happened). If they weren't included then each of the "+0.5" on the blackboard should have been "+0.25" instead and then you add a single "+0.5" for the water vapour +ve feedback and loss of Arctic Ocean sea ice loss +ve feedback (it gets a little complicated because you actually add another 0.25 but then that plays out over a couple of hundred years so we don't actually care). So, in summary, Roger made an absolutely massive ignorant mistake there by adding the 1.0 for feedbacks on when it was already included. This is what happens when you have nice social work, literature, poetry & author persons attempting to do solid physical science. They invariably screw it up like this. I like the Roger fellow though he seems pleasant.

Just to be clear on the mumbled aside at 25:20 "there's a 20% chance that it's going to be 8 degrees higher in the next 5 years" that's huge false information simply because that happens to be physically impossible for this particular planet (there are other planets that it's possible for). So I can answer Roger's talk with himself at 25:30 "if I understand basic physics", the answer is obviously Roger doesn't understand basic physics. but that's OK because I can confirm his +2.2 degrees from 1750 AD if no carbon is burned from this year on, and the ocean stops taking up CO2, and the Arctic Ocean becomes typically ice free (

  37. grindupBaker

    grindupBaker10 ヶ月 前

At 24:35 I think the reason why Roger's "still to come through" 0.5 (I actually computed 0.54 the next 100 years with more sooner than later) is because the climate scientists must have determined that the ocean keeps taking up its 1.2 ppmv / year like it's been doing so the CO2 actually goes down in that case if humans stop burning. Climate scientists absolutely do know about that 0.54 or whatever because that's Jim Hansen's 1 watt Christmas tree light with his grandkids video and it's also Trenberth's "93% of heat into the oceans". I'll not bother to explain why but those 2 things plus the ice melt are the same "still to come through" 0.5 Roger mentions.

  38. grindupBaker

    grindupBaker10 ヶ月 前

I can answer Roger's confusion at 20:22. It's because the person's he's speaking with are referring to best estimate of >90% open water for the entire summer June 22 to September 22 and Roger is referring to >90% open water for a day or so in September. Completely different things. When you discuss anything with somebody I've always found that it's always best to first make sure that you are both discussing the same thing.

  46. nyood mono

    nyood mono10 ヶ月 前

@grindupBaker That goes a long with the idea that climate always is "special" If we look back warm periods were prosperous and cold periods were harsh. Where is the danger? Sea levels may rise faster, but there is no deluvian. Any "tipping point" or runaway theorie makes no sense to me in the first place. Ice caps and permafrost siberia has melted before, without a mass extincton. You should always remember that we are in the negative temperature equilibrium of earth since 4 million years, modern humanity is on an interglacial peak today. Which leads me to your sentence "so that's just 2 extra years of coal/oil/gas burning thrown in as a free extra". Here you assume that the estimated Co2 sensitivity is correct, which is wrong for me in the first place, which just leads back to our fundamental disagreements.

  47. grindupBaker

    grindupBaker10 ヶ月 前

+nyood mono "Nothing special will happen, the arctic ice melted and grew back many times". That's meaningless because it depends what you mean by "special". The increase in GMST by no Arctic sea ice will be modest because GMST will rise by 0.15 degrees June 22 to September 22 each year then cool again in the Arctic winter, so that's just 2 extra years of coal/oil/gas burning thrown in as a free extra, that feedback starting as soon as there's an ice free summer. Also, there'll be an extra 0.02 degrees/ year of GMST increase for 20 years and then it'll taper to zero after the +0.4 degrees total. That's quite a bit though. But where the big effect is going to be is in disruption of the northern hemisphere wind patterns because of the large change in *relative* temperature. I don't know whether the effects will be more severe rain/snow/wind or not but there'll definitely be some noticeable climate change.

@nyood mono Don't you get it? I AM a sceptic! Anyone who knows me will tell you that. What I'm NOT is a 'conspiracy theorist'. Climategate is a conspiracy theory. People who wanted to discredit climate change went through some leaked emails between climate scientists looking for stuff they could use. They found some words and phrases which were taken out of context. A number of respected organisations in the US and UK investigated the claims and concluded there was no substance to them. Unfortunately, the climate 'deniers' started spreading this misinformation all over the internet. In any case, scientists cannot afford to lie or use 'tricks' because other scientists will check their data and before long they will be found out and discredited. I could reply to your other points but it will take too long and, quite frankly, I'm not even THAT bothered about climate change since I'm unlikely to still be around by the time it fully kicks in. Just thought Roger Hallam/ Extinction Rebellion were vaguely interesting, though I'm not sure about Hallam's precise analysis of the science - he should have got a proper scientist in for that part.

@Ron Harrison Usaly its the skeptics that have problems with wiki. So in this case wiki is wrong stating that IPCC does not do research? And i did not quote anyone, i have my arguments. Climatgate is about how they think: They are politicians, they use a militaristic tone. Complaining that they "lost" a science magazine to the sKepticts. Just watch anything you can Find with Micheal Mann speaking, then you will realize what kind of people rule this institute, i was stunned. Their conclusions are not sound! They overestimate the sensitivity of Co2 and it is the skeptics that show this over and over. If they were a healthy institute they would try to falsify their own hypothesis, instead they fight the "opposition" and let them look fringe.

Not that this is in any sense necessary, I have agreed with Stephanie Kelton view on what a fiat dollar means for over 6 years now. But, it does help send the message that who will need gold when we are all dead? So, let us get serious about this. 2] Start building a few factories to build solar panels using the best tech we have now, just like we built factories to build B-24 bombers. What the world needs is a glut of solar panels. 3] Double all the unemployment benefit payments for all workers who's job is eliminated by this fight. For just as long or longer then the current system would allow. Then they will not feel so damaged and it will stimulate the communities where the money is spent.

Arctic methane release is the release of methane from seas and soils in permafrost regions of the Arctic. While a long-term natural process, it is exacerbated by global warming. This results in a positive feedback effect, as methane is itself a powerful greenhouse gas.current warming (just one degree Celisus) has already left a discernible mark on 77 of 94 different ecological processes, including species’ genetics, seasonal responses, overall distribution, and even morphology - i.e. physical traits including body size and shape. About 47 percent of land mammals and 23 percent of birds have already suffered negative impacts form climate change. In all, nearly 700 species in just these two groups are flagging under climate change, according to this research. If global society doesn’t kick its fossil fuel addiction - and quick - scientists estimate that temperatures could rise 4-5 degrees Celsius by the end of the century. Such a rise would be not so much catastrophic, but apocalyptic.Scientists are working frantically to give melanin to white and non-melanated Asian populations or else they will cease to exist by 2100.The master enzyme in all this is tyrosinase. If the gene for this enzyme is defective, the result is a person with albinism, someone who makes no melanin at all. But the most remarkable discovery made by molecular biologists has been that most of us, regardless of skin color, have quite enough tyrosinase in our melanocytes to make us very black. In those of us without eumelanin (brown/black) who are pheomelanin dominant (white), something is preventing the enzyme from functioning at full capacity--and that seems to be a combination of two genetic mechanisms: a switch that causes the cell to make most of the tyrosinase in an inactive form, and a tendency to make a lot of inhibitors of the enzyme. In the body, the effects of either or both of these mechanisms can be modified by such environmental factors as exposure to ultraviolet light. People with albinism are highly sensitive to ultraviolet, which can easily damage skin and eyes, make one prone to many pre-natal diseases, premature aging, myopia and infertility. In animals, melanin comes and goes at the dictates of evolutionary pressures. It is reasonable to assume, then, that we humans have this molecule not because it makes us smarter but primarily because it helps us survive a variety of environmental conditions. Clearly melanin protects us from the ravages of ultraviolet light. Some of the most darkly pigmented people in the world, natives of the North Solomon Islands, almost never get basal cell carcinoma or melanoma, and if they do have melanomas, these tumors arise on the light-skinned soles of their feet. Caucasians in South Africa,Australia,The middle East,India, and South America have high rates of skin cancer which are doubling every year caucasians living in Hawaii, have the highest documented skin cancer rate in the United States. ALL European nations are below replacement levels for indigenous populations yet the word remains silent about this citing economies as the culprit while African nations with worse economies are seeing the highest number of births in decades! Many believe this is the underlying cause for the rise in white supremacist rhetoric and fascism globally.Climate adaptation is surprisingly rarely reported as a cause for the build‐up of reproductive isolation between diverging populations. Fast temperature‐dependent co‐evolution between mitochondrial and nuclear genomes may be particularly likely to lead to hybrid sterility...This may already be apparent as studies show that men from European populations globally have lost 60 percent of their ability t bear children since 1973!Data from nearly 43000 men around the world found that sperm counts dropped by more than half in Western countries.Men even have their own version of a biological clock. Beginning around their mid-30's, male fertility gradually degrades, and while most men produce sperm to their dying day, those past 40 who help conceive have a greater risk of passing on genetic abnormalities to their children, including autism. Globally the oldest male populations are white and Asian adding a double whammy to the situation four decades ago, the average "Western" (European) man had a sperm concentration of 99 million per milliliter. By 2011, that had fallen to 47.1 million and continues to drop by 1.5 percent each year! The researchers found no significant declines for non-Western men, though other studies have found major drops in countries like China and Japan(non-eumelanated Asian populations).Women need to average roughly 2.1 children-enough to replace themselves and their partner, with a spare bit to offset kids who don’t survive to reproductive age-to keep a country’s population stable through birth alone. The U.S. is at 1.8 and dependent on continued immigration to keep the white population growing ironically the anti immigration sentiments currently in the US are speeding up demographic decline and destabilizing the economy. Low sperm counts may also presage a premature death, even among men in the prime of their lives who might seem otherwise healthy.

Roger, Why are you using the 2014 PIOMASS septmeber minimum graph in 2018? Add the missing 4 years data so people can't accuse you of being misleading. The current trend is 3.2+/-1 per decade, ( suggesting ice-free (in September) sometime between 2026 and 2034, which is still very worrying, but not quite the 2020 or 2017 your graph suggests. Similarly you tell us the 100% guaranteed temp is 1.2C+ 0.5C + 0.5C, without backing it up. I've watched an awful lot of climate change videos too, and I'll give you 1.7C, but not 2.2C _guaranteed_ at this stage (unless you are talking about the long-term equilibrium (i.e. another thousand years), but that's not really very relevant right now - it's the next 50-odd year that really counts). Perhaps you can justify that, but just stating it looks extremely dubious. I think we are well off the path of 'simple arithmetic' at this point. Your basic premise about positive feedbacks is sound, and I agree that the uncertainties is not a good thing - it works both ways. I also think your Extinction rebellion plan is brilliant - I'm signed up. We need things to happen, fast, and I agree with your analysis that this method could well be effective. However it's really important that you get the science right, and are not partaking of McPherson-style catastrophism. It makes us look bad, and helps make us dismissable. Kevin Anderson invariably gets it right, and still makes his points very clearly, and plenty scarily enough - there is no need to exaggerate at this stage. And 'Nitrate sulphide' is not a thing. Perhaps you mean Hydrogen Sulphide. Anyway, thanks you for your efforts. I really hope it works, but please adjust this talk if you give it again.

We are in a deepshit but we don't know exactly how deep it is. Don't believe anybody who says we are going extinct this year or that. Because earth system is a complex system and we don't know it's exact mechanisms. Regarding the climate change; we don't know the feedback mechanisms, if water vapour reflets or absorbs more heat, whether thermafrost started to melt or not, if so what would be the effects, what exaclty would be the amount of dimming effect, if it stops immediately what would be consequences, if the resulting consequence would be instant heating how long it would continue, what would the effect of climate change to agriculture exactly etc. etc. I am not a climate sceptic, I don't deny humans altered earth's climate but we don't know exaclty what would be the consequences. Nobody knows it. Effects or timings. I think one of the psychological dimension that effects the thinking of the doomers is that they hate themselves and their lifes. They deep down desire their life, world, civilization to end. Some of them find their lifes so boring that, they desire any change even the end of sentient life on earth. Apocalyptic world view supply a very convenient escape route from responsibility also. Responsibility in terms of nearly everything, It's basic premise is this; civilization, world, sentient life will disappear in a near future and my pathetic, disgusting life with it. It is not about my individual decisions or actions, that's the way it is, beyond my control, I am not to blame. Mechanism that will bring it is on the way, it can’t be reversed, nobody can do anything about it, especially me. In fact it is a good thing that my life will also end with it, because I hate it. Better still, everybody’s life will end, so I don’t need to envy those who seems to be contend with their life and also I won’t miss anything because everything will end. I don’t need to do anything individually, I don’t need to act, I don’t need to decide on anything, I don’t even need to commit suicide because even that will occur automatically.

And what does the time lord suggest we do about Volcano's ? Researchers say new evidence has found there was a worse time to be alive - the year 536 AD. The Earth was plunged into darkness for 18 months when a thick cloud blocked the sun - causing temperatures to drop, crops to fail and people to starve. Temperatures that summer plunged to between 1.5C and 2.5C (36.5F). The decade that followed would be the coldest in the previous 2,300 years. "It was the beginning of one of the worst periods to be alive, if not the worst year," Michael McCormick, historian and archaeologist, told Science Magazine. The source of the cloud so thick it obscured the sun in the sixth century has long puzzled historians, but ultra precise analysis of ice from a Swiss glacier has unlocked the mystery. A team led by Mr McCormick, chair of the Harvard University initiative for the science of the human past, and glaciologist Paul Mayewski, of the climate change institute of the University of Maine (UM) in Orono, found an enormous volcanic eruption in Iceland was likely to blame.

Extinction Rebellion and the Progressive Dem wins are a start, but both are too optimistic and too slow. Here's why: 1) An ice free arctic in 2019/2020 ensures an abrupt spike in temperatures, massive crop losses, already down 20%-30% in 2018, global famine and extinction in well under 5 years due to 1,600 nuclear facilities failing catastrophically when skilled labor stops maintaining them. 2) Plankton biomass is down 50% and falling fast, which means oxygen levels and ozone protecting us from UV is also falling, while our backup oxygen machine, the Amazon, is being destroyed by Brazil's new president. If we remain paralyzed or lethargic we are toast. 3) SIMPLE EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS: A $1 tax on every gallon of petro at the pump and spent helping cities make a rapid ONE year transition to zero emission power and fuels. 4) To ensure you hit targets simply stop relying on election cycles. PUBLIC GRAND JURIES, already supported by the Supreme Court, which anyone can form and in their first month INDICT, RECALL AND REPLACE politicians at all levels in under 30 days starting with your local Mayor and County Supervisors, then Governor and State A.G. if any one of them hesitates, stalls, ignores grave issues, makes an ignorant statement proving them unfit for public office, or makes a single false promise, called "Intent to Defraud" and "Gross/Willful Negligence" which thereby endangers human life. James Hansen's federal suit on behalf of kids employs a similar tactic. A coalition of Mayors so empowered by AG's and Governors can move mountains at the state level and a coalition of Governors backed by Mayors can change the nation, the planet and hopefully our grim future. 5) Using your Grand Juries, Mayors, local D.A's and State A.G. and a coalition of Governors during the second 30 day period simply indict and prosecute criminal cases against Members of Congress to accelerate their acceptance of a progressive agenda, which must lay out an aggressive ONE YEAR OR BUST plan to make every American community zero emission. The well paid jobs alone make the case, as does GreenTech exports given our ballooning Natl. Debt. BONUS: the same process can defund any corporation or billionaire who funds destructive processes, banking billions of additional funds for local projects. In short, feed on the corruption like piranhas. Lawyers love a good feeding fest. 6) Once that's fully underway we'll need to deploy geo-engineering solutions, such as nurturing plankton (oxygen/CO2 exchange), reforestation, desert remediation, hazmat cleanup, eliminating plastics and focus Intl. pressure, if not our military, on protecting the Amazon and other rainforests, converting deserts worldwide into lush,, green carbon sinks. 7) Additionally, sad as it may be, while we eliminate CO2/methane emissions and reduce greenhouse gases and ocean carbonic acid levels we'll need solar radiation mgmt; i.e. sulphur dioxide paritcles, for a brief period to IMMEDIATELY halt trends leading to an ice free arctic in 2019/2020. If we reverse that we buy time and if not, nothing else we do really matters. 8) If we do ALL of this we might dodge extinction. If we do some of this or are too slow, there won't be much left still functioning during the 2020 election and perhaps nothing left alive on Earth by 2022-2025. You have months, barely; but certainly not 12 years or even 2. You can't argue with physics, nor should you waste time arguing with corrupt or ignorant politicians. You don't have any time to waste. Just indict and prosecute a few and watch how fast the rest of them get a clue. 9) There is hope. The Mauna Loa CO2 graph (Keeling Curve) clearly shows a decrease in CO2 levels 6 months a year. If we amplify that and work to reverse CO2 all year long we mighg actually drive down atmospheric CO2 and ocean carbonic acid levels faster than we thought possible. 10) Discussions about population and action by other nations aren't worthless, but given our experience and budgets dominating nations, these challenges are minor compared to learning to harness our own political bodies. Its not that tough if we try and if we fail, we all die. Choose wisely. We won't and thankfully at least our votes count., back to a Hometown Grand Jury near you.

Those folks off grid who fail to predict regional climate shifts are likely to become toast or radiation or UV or famine or pandemic victims, while a few might, maybe, form a few isolated hellhole pockets that survive, though odds are against them being around long. Authoring 140 sites, roughly a dozen with solutions for citizens and politicians alike doesn't seem to move the needle much. Writing to politicians, even to progressives is also near useless. Telling friends/assocs/strangers, yet another wasted breath. Not one of them will switch their lifestyle, rather I've found they entrench, enjoying the last bit of fine wine as Rome burns. A tiny fraction actually take the steps to try and survive while a few others make meaningful changes, though far from enough, and a few others, very few, cry for the geo-engineering changes that might buy us time while we sort it out. 100. James Darling

    James Darling8 ヶ月 前

The sea ice grows in the winter and shrinks in the summer. The annual minimum has shrunk by 75% to what the annual minimum average was in the 20th century. When there is a blue ocean event for the first time, it will probably only last for a few days before ice starts to form again. Once it happens though, the blue ocean state will last for a longer period of time with each consecutive season, finally reaching an equilibrium of no ice year round about 10 years after the initial no ice for a few days in September. Look at the image at the top of the report. Multi-year ice is ice that survives the summer. Pretty soon, (any season now) there will be no ice that survives the summer.
